About The Cheese Traveler

Store size varies enormously, from a small corner grocery with a few aisles to a full supermarket chain location in Albany with a bakery, seafood counter and food court under one roof. Sales and promotions are often posted in-store or in a weekly flyer rather than online, so prices listed on a website may be out of date. Seafood markets sell live and on-ice product and can usually clean or prepare fish on request for a small fee. Specialty food stores in New York may focus narrowly on one category, like a butcher, a rice and dry goods shop, or an import store, so calling ahead to confirm stock for a specific item saves a wasted trip.
Hours are published for 6 days a week. The most common schedule is 11 amβ6 pm. Note that it does not open on Monday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach The Cheese Traveler at (518) 443-0440; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. More information is available on its website, thecheesetraveler.com.
Customers rate it 4.9 out of 5 on Google across 307 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded specialty food stores in Albany.
Albany is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Albany peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

This is an excellent store offering a wide variety of unique cheeses, crackers, breads, and fresh fruit among other culinary delights. My family thoroughly enjoyed this gift this past weekend.

Stopped in shortly before closing hoping to purchase a cheese platter for a small gathering of about six people and was told they could not accommodate the order because platters require 40 minutes to an hour to prepare. While I understand businesses have closing procedures, I was honestly surprised by that timeframe for a relatively small platter, especially since there was no posted cutoff time for ordering. I had visited once before and ordered one of the smaller personal lunch-style cheese boxes, which was cute and enjoyable, so I came in expecting something similar could still be accommodated. The employee was polite, but the experience was disappointing because the store was still technically open, and there was no indication online or in-store that platter service ends early. I would recommend customers place platter orders well ahead of closing to avoid the same frustration.

What a beautiful experience! The owner made me a specialty cheese sandwich with artichokes and the creamiest tomato soup. I felt cold and tired coming from out of town, and this lifted my spirits and warmed me deep. Sheβs a heart of gold kind of woman who loves to nourish people. Definitely stay for lunch!!

I love this cheese shop they always have great prices and new finds. Normally I get a grilled cheese but now they have one person cheese and meat boards to go where they can pick out random ones based on your preferences. This is a must stop every time I'm in Albany. The staff is so kind and knowledgeable and I always feel welcome. Small seating availability I recommend getting their products to go.
